British Values and SMSC Education
Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development is integral to all aspects of the learning, ethos and culture at Ribblesdale. We celebrate the wide range of values, beliefs, and experiences that shape a young person’s identity and understanding of the world around them. At Ribblesdale, we believe that SMSC is a crucial aspect of education, as it helps children and young people develop a strong sense of self and an awareness of their place in society. We foster opportunities for pupils to develop a robust moral compass as they learn about various beliefs and cultures throughout the entire curriculum.
Ribblesdale School actively promotes fundamental British Values, including democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law, and individual liberty, through a variety of school-wide activities. These values are reinforced during assemblies, where pupils are asked to consider how these values apply to real-world scenarios and events. Form time activities further support this by encouraging open dialogue and collaborative decision-making, fostering a sense of democracy and mutual respect. PSHE lessons play a key role in educating pupils about personal freedoms, tolerance, and the importance of abiding by the rule of law. Additionally, awareness days provide opportunities to explore these values in depth, ensuring that pupils understand their significance in shaping a fair and inclusive society.
Please read our SMSC Policy for further information about the way in which SMSC is deeply embedded in our curriculum. You can find this on our Policies page.
