On Tuesday 24th March a Year 10 Hospitality & Catering group from Ribblesdale took over the Olive Press restaurant in Clitheroe. The 16 pupils prepared the food and setup the restaurant during the day and served 60 paying guests in the evening. There were canapés as guests arrived and then a three course meal was served.The pupils were divided into the roles of chefs & waiting on staff. The surprise entertainment was from two year 11 boys who serenaded everyone and gave each lady a red rose. This was a very successful event which is going to count towards their GCSE in Hospitality & Catering. We thank the Olive Press management & staff for giving the pupils a great opportunity in a real business related setting.

Young Enterprise at the Stratford Trade Fair

Ribblesdale were the only school representing the North West of England at the event, which took place on Saturday, May the 21st. The company Visualize made a huge impact on the locals and foriegn visitors who were visiting the town. Their innovative product, a DVD promoting tourism in the Ribble Valley, was a huge success and certainly put the area on the map. “People who had never heard of the Ribble Valley certainly do now” commented the judges and Chairmen of the Stratford Borough Council. Ribblesdale’s team worked tirelessly on their stand for over six hours. Bathed in great March sunshine the town was bursting with tourists.

Photo requests came in thick and fast from visitors from all around the World. Visualize directors were dressed up in Ribble Valley costumes, such as Clitheroe Castle, Town Crier Chefs (we have fantastic places to eat) and farmers (we have the best local produce). Visualize were the best supported team on the day. DVDs of ‘Explore the Ribble Valley’ are on the way to America, Canada, Germany, Spain, Italy and Japan. The residents and the borough council can be proud of Ribblesdale’s pupils for putting tourism in the Ribble Valley on the map. Visualize won a commendation for their achievements on the day.

Creche at Year 8 Parents’ Evening

Exciting new development! Parents who have had to bring younger children to the Year 7 and year 8 parents’ evenings were amazed to find a creche set up and eager to look after the youngsters! Pupils from the year 10 Health, Social Care and Early Years Double award GCSE group organised and ran a creche complete with a range of activities including making Mothering Sunday and Easter cards, action songs, story reading and many other activities.

Proud teacher Mrs Crewe said “The pupils were really caring and organised and made sure that every child was treated as an important individual. They were amazing!”

Thank you to all those parents and guardians who trusted us enough to leave their children with us. I has helped the GCSE student learn a lot about child development and provided them with very useful experience.

Nestle Box Tops for Books

The English department is collecting book tokens (box tops) from Nestle cereal boxes. Thanks to pupils who have brought some in already, but please can we let you know that the deadline for submitting our tokens is March 31st, so please could you bring all the tokens you have to the D-Block Englsh office as soon as possible! Thank you!

Our pupils (and parents!) and staff are extremely generous, we raised a total of £1132.29 on Friday 13th March for Comic Relief! There were various fund-raising activities including non-uniform, cake sales and the very popular Staff vs. Pupils netball games at lunch time. Video coming soon!

Pirates!

Ribblesdale is very proud to present it’s latest production, ‘Pirates’.

The performances are on Tuesday the 31st March, Wednesday 1st April and Thursday 2nd April at 7pm.

Approximately 70 pupils are involved in the Drama, Dance and Music. It is a swashbuckling adventure full of hilarity!

The tickets will be on sale in the D Block English office from Thursday 19th March.

£3.00 for children, £5.00 for adults and £13.00 for a family ticket (2 adults and 2 children).

Multi Skills Festival

Over 150 primary pupils from our family of primary schools took part in a multi skills festival at Hyndburn Sports Centre on Wednesday 4th March. There was non stop activity for over two hours. The skills which they took part included, balance, agility co-ordination and cognitive. As well as practicing the skills they were also tested in them and the results will be sent back to the schools. If an individual comes in the top 30 in Hyndburn/Ribble Valley they will be invited to attend a multi skills academy in May.

Helping the primary pupils were 36 year 10 Junior Sports Leaders who made an outstanding contribution in organising the pupils and keeping them going with activities throughout the morning. They placed an emphasis on fun and fitness and everyone got on fantastically well.

School Sports Co-ordinator Mr Ashworth said the leaders were fantastic ambassadors for Ribblesdale School.

The schools which took part were St James’, Balderstone, Mellor, Simonstone, Salisbury and Chatburn.

Summer Show 2009 Auditions

The summer show is an evening of performances celebrating music and dance. It has been an amazing success over the past two years. Any pupil who is interested in singing and/or dancing at any level is welcome to attend the auditions which will take place Tuesday 14th/24th march 3.10-5 in the Drama Complex.

Pupils will need to perform…

a solo song ( unnacompanied verse and chorus)

and/or

a short dance (with CD)

Non-uniform Day: Friday 13th March 2009

Dear Parent/Guardian,

During this week a number of young people and their Coaches/Year Leaders have planned a number of charitable events in support of ‘Red Nose Day’ tomorrow. It seems sensible that the calendared ‘non uniform day’ scheduled for the Friday 3rd April should instead be held tomorrow Friday 13th March.

The cost to pupils not to wear their uniform will be £1.00.

Year 7 Parents’ Evening 12/03/09

Dear Parent, I am happy to invite you to attend the annual Year 7 Parents’ Consultation Evening. This takes place on Thursday 12 March. It is a very important evening where you will have the opportunity to discuss the progress of your son or daughter with their subject teachers. Please bring your son or daughter with you in full school uniform.

The consultation begins at 4.00pm and finishes at 6.45pm prompt. During this time a queuing system is in operation and all teachers will be available in the Sports Hall. Please be patient. We try to limit conversations to 3-5 minutes recognising that further follow up appointments can be arranged, if needed.

Teachers of the Year 7 Foundation Programme (SPLAT) will not be present as you will receive a separate report and invitation to celebrate young peoples’ achievements and talk to teachers in the summer term.

Some important people will be available to see during the evening: Year 7 Pastoral Coordinator, Mrs Birkett, will deal with any pastoral or welfare issues. Year Leader, Mr Beardsworth, will be able to discuss academic issues across a range of subjects. The School Counsellor/Parents in Partnership (PIP) Representative will also be available. The PIP group has recently been established and has attracted a growing number of parents who want an opportunity to meet regularly, support each other and gain access to outside agencies that support young people and families.

Parents are asked to sign in and out again in the main cafeteria where refreshments will be available throughout the evening. Prefects will be on hand to direct you. You will find members of the school’s leadership team here until 6.45pm.

Over the years, experience has demonstrated that regular attendance at Parents’ Consultation Evenings plays a key role in ensuring that excellent progress is maintained. We would be delighted if you are able to join us and look forward to meeting you.

Subjects covered in this event are: English, Geography, History, PE, Maths, Music, RE, Science, Spanish and Technology. Your son or daughter’s coach will be present.

Please return the reply slip to Student Services no later than Thursday 5th March.
